Haward Studios

Sidney Haward (1858-1924) born in Lambeth, London, the son of a slate merchant founded Haward Studio in the 1880s and was a printed and woven textile designer. He had trained at the Silver Studio and later went on to set up his own in Kensington. Haward became one of the city’s leading design studios, free-lancing for clients such as Liberty & Co, Story’s, Alexander Morton & Co. and Hamptons. His two sons, Eric and Hubert were involved in the business, however Hubert died during the war in 1915. The family were based in Chiswick, Middlesex. After Sidney’s death, his widow purchased the firm in 1931 and it remained in the family for three generations as a freelance design studio. The Warner Textile Archive possesses textiles designed by Haward Studio between 1936-1970. Haward Studios continued to operate until the 1980s, ownership moving through the generations. Haward Studio reimagined the iconic ‘Ianthe’ art nouveau design for Liberty in the 1960s.
