Alec Hunter

Born in Haslemere, Surrey in 1899. Son of Edmund Hunter, founder of the St Edmundsbury Silk Weaving Works. He studied at St George’s, Harpenden and at Byam Shaw School of Art, London. He worked for his father’s firm in Letchworth from c.1920 – 1927. He then moved to Edinburgh, and set up Edinburgh Weavers as a division of Morton Sundour Fabrics. He joined Warner & Sons in 1932 as a designer and became a director of the firm in 1943, continuing as production manager at Braintree until his death in 1958. Known for his innovative, geometric powerwoven patterns, adaptations of looms and steering the woven section at Warner & Sons.
